Psoriatic Arthritis


Psoriatic arthritis is one of the 100 types of Arthritis known to human. Psoriatic arthritis occurs to those suffering from Psoriasis. The Psoriasis is a skin condition in which redness, swelling, inflammation and scaly patches appears all along the skin.

Psoriatic arthritis occurs more on people who have a tissue type HLA-B27. People suffering from psoriatic tend to develop psoriatic arthritis in its later stage. It is equally found in both male and female.

Psoriatic arthritis is painful and no complete treatment is available. However with Ayurvedic treatment of this disease the inflammation of the joints can be reduced to minimum.

There is a possibility that other vital organs of the body can also get affected due to psoriatic arthritis.

Besides the psoriatic disease, the reason by the development of psoriatic arthritis is genetic, change in environment and immune system.

Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are:

  • Red, inflamed skin
  • Pain and swelling in the joints
  • Pulling away of nails from nail beds
  • Discoloration of nails

People suffering from psoriatic arthritis develop psoriatic nail lesions i.e. pitting of the nails, or the complete lack of a nail.

Psoriatic Arthritis is of 5 types:

  1. Symmetric Psoriatic Arthritis
  2. Asymmetric Psoriatic Arthritis
  3. Digital Interphalangeal Predominant (DIP) arthritis
  4. Arthritis mutilans
  5. Spondylitis

Symmetric psoriatic arthritis occurs to joints on both sides of the body and accounts for fifty percent of all psoriatic arthritis cases.

Asymmetric psoriatic arthritis is mild does not occur in the same joints on both sides of the body. It affects thirty-five percent of people suffering from psoriatic arthritis.

Diet plays an important role in fighting with psoriatic arthritis. A balanced diet that includes fresh fruits, salads and protein rich food should be taken by psoriatic arthritis patient.

Ayurveda also advises Yoga exercises, special asanas that are carried out to provide relief from the pain caused in the joints.
