Degenerative Arthritis


Degenerative arthritis also known as Osteoarthritis is one of the most common types of Arthritis disease. Degenerative arthritis mostly affects the weight bearing joints i.e. knees, hips, and spine. Old age people are more prone to this disease.

Degenerative arthritis is caused when cartilage protecting our joints deteriorates. It occurs mostly because of regular wear and tear and growing age. Present around joints acts as a lubricant to the joints and help in smooth rubbing of two bones. But in this disease, this fluid starts to dry down and cartilage begins to deteriorate causing the two bones to rub with each other. This causes pain and inflammation in the joints.

Degenerative arthritis patient suffer from unbearable pain when they try to stand or walk. Actually there are few exercises that carried out at right time after proper medication helps in reviving patient from this disease. Obesity or overweight is considered as one of the causes of this disease. People who have put on excessive weight are more prone to this disease than others. Overweight causes excess pressure on the knee, hips and spine. To reduce weight and to avoid getting this disease one must carry out regular exercise, avoid junk food and eat healthy and nutritious food.

If the disease is at an earlier stage, regular exercises like swimming and walking are advised by the doctor. In later stages exercises are only advised after proper medication and after some recovery.

Ayurvedic treatment involves Snehana therapy i.e. hot steam baths that help in controlling the agonizing pain. Hot water or lukewarm water is given to drink as well rather than normal or cold water.

Herbs like ginger, boswellia, guggul, resin, turmeric, ashwagandha, etc are known for their relief affect against joint inflammation and pain. They can be included in regular diet for quick relief.

People must eat fresh fruits and vegetables to keep their bones young and strong for long time and to avoid generating degenerative arthritis.
