Astigmatism is a common problem of reduced eyesight in which cornea of eye becomes oval, rather than round, which is the normal shape. The word astigmatism is derived from the Greek word A, means "without," and stigma, means "point". In astigmatism, light rays entering the eyes focus on two different points instead of one.

Causes of Astigmatism
The primary cause of astigmatism is a distortion in the shape of cornea, causing it to become oval in shape and losing its natural roundness. One of the major causes of astigmatism includes sitting, standing or sleeping with an improper posture of head or neck for a longer period of time. Moreover, it can also cause as a result of certain types of eye surgery, such as cataract surgery.

  • Astigmatism usually leads to blurred vision.
  • The basic symptoms include eyestrain and headaches.

  • Practicing different yoga for eyes has also proved to be quite effective in reducing the risk of astigmatism.
  • According to ayurveda most eye problems are the result of digestive disorders. So, ayurveda emphasize on the practice of regular eye exercises. In addition to that, amla, licorice, spinach, carrots and triphala, are also very beneficial.

Though, the ultimate treatment of astigmatism is use of lenses or surgery but with the help of ayurvedic treatment of astigmatism we can reduce the risk of this disease to a great extent.
