Ayurveda is the oldest medical science originated in India for more than 5000 years ago. Derived from two Sanskrit words 'ayus' means 'life' and 'veda means 'knowledge', it gives us the complete knowledge of life. Started by the sages of vedic period, ayurveda has not lost its significance in the modern period too. The concept of ayurveda is not confined to science but it is vast combination of science, arts and philosophy. The complete knowledge ayurveda can be gained through several ancient scriptures such as Atharvaveda, Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtangha Hridaya Samhita.
According to ayurveda our body is comprised of five elements namely space, air, fire, water and earth whivch are also called the Panchamahabhutas. Everything in this world is made of these five elements and all the organisms in earth contain some extent of all these elements. Moreover there are three gunas in an individual, which decides the nature of a person. These are: Sattva guna, Rajas guna & Tamas guna.
Ayurveda tells that, the health of a person depends upon the three doshas called tidoshas. These are: Vata, Pitta and Kapha in Sanskrit. Thses rae responsible for regulation of all the physiological and psychological mechanisam of our body. There should be a balance between the tridoshas in order to avoid diseases. Ayurveda has classified a different branch for the specific treatment of all body parts called asthanga ayurveda. Asthanga ayurveda is classified into eight branches depending upon the part of body and type of disease. These are: Kayachikitsa, Shalya chikitsa, Bala chikitsa, Graha chikitsa, Urdhvanga chikits, Agadha Tantra, Jara chikitsa and Vrishya chikitsa. Moreover, ayurveda has laid special emphasis on the practice of yoga to lead a healthy life.
Ayurveda is a complete science of living a healthy life. It provides several remedial practices for the prevention and treatment of almost all the prevailing diseases in a natural way. It teaches us the art of maintaining a harmony between the body, mind and soul, which is the most important factor in order to a healthy living.
