Clinically, depression is a mood disorder in which the suffering person feels sad, anxious, frustrated, averted, anger and hopeless. Generally depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behaviour, feelings and physical well-being.

A depressed person doesn?t take interest in any activities and feel empty, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, or restless. So, we can say depression is a state of bad mood in which the depressed person lost interest in any favourite activity, experience loss of appetite or overeating, or problems concentrating, remembering details or making decisions; and may contemplate or attempt suicide.

Causes

There is no exact cause known for depression as per medical practitioner state but many researchers believe that it happens due to chemical changes in brain. This problem may also associated with genes or may it can happened due to some social or environmental factors like family history, chronic illness, failure in any part of life, social isolation or sexual abuse.

Results of Depression

Depression generates lots of physiological and psychological disorders in the patients like insomnia, excessive sleeping, hallucinations and delusions, fatigue, loss of energy, or aches, pains or digestive problems and some psychological behaviour.

Risk Factors

Chronic depression can generate several severe physiological and psychological disorders that can be proved dreadful for the sufferer like madness, dementia, suicidal attempts, ferocity, several gastrointestinal and autoimmune disorders.

Symptoms

If depression is very severe, the following psychotic symptoms may occurs:

  • Agitation, restlessness, and irritability
  • Dramatic change in appetite, often with weight gain or loss
  • Very difficult to concentrate
  • Fatigue and lack of energy
  • Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness
  • Feelings of worthlessness, self-hate, and guilt
  • Becoming withdrawn or isolated
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Trouble sleeping or excessive sleeping

Prevention

Do not drink alcohol or use illegal drugs. These substances can worsen the status of depression and might lead to thoughts of suicide. Follow the instruction of your doctor or psychologists strictly. Indulge yourself in the following activities, these might prove very helpful in easing the intensity of depression:

  • Get more exercise
  • Maintain good sleep habits
  • Seek out activities that bring you pleasure
  • Volunteer or get involved in group activities
  • Talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling
  • Try to be around people who are caring and positive
