Hatha, a union of ?ha? means ?sun? and ?tha? means ?moon? explains hatha yoga as the union of opposites. Hatha yoga was first introduced by a hindu sage Yogi Swatmarama of 15th century of India. He compiled this form of yoga in his book Hatha Yoga Pradipika. This is also called a kind of forced yoga as it gives more emphasis on physical activities. Hath yoga implements lots of stretching, breathing and relaxation therapies resulting in physical, mental as well as emotional benefits. Hath yoga is the most popular form og yoga in the western countries.

The stretching done in hatha yoga are called postures or asanas. Hatha yoga has numerous postures within its reach specified for different conditions. Conventional hatha yoga mailnly consists of physical postures (asanas), breathing (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana).

Asanas are the postures that are to be taken while performing yoga. This is derived from the word ?asana? means ?seat?. These postures make us feel relaxed and were generally meant for carrying out meditation. Asanas provides us with greater physical flexibility as well as mental rewards such as concentration and will power.

Pranayama is the practice of breath control, which is a combination of two Sanskrit words ?prana?(life) and ?ayama? (to control). The regular practice of pranayama helps us to explore the immense energy inside us, which remains dormant without activation.

Hatha yoga has both physical as well as therapeutic benefits. Physical benefits of hatha yoga includes- improvement in flexibility of muscles, improves synchronization between the muscles and bones, creates balance in the body, relief from backache, improves the physiological system of body, increases the stamina, reduces breathing problems, increases immunity, supports circulatory system, reduces the risk of heart disorders, blood pressures and obesity.

The therapeutic benefits includes- relaxation and refreshment of body and mind, enhances concentration level, reduces stress and makes you spiritual.
