Aromatherapy Body Massage
Aromatherapy body massage is one of the most commonly practiced therapies for relaxation and rejuvenation. Aromatherapy body massage involves several techniques and mainly based on different strokes for different areas. The basic strokes that are used for massage in aromatherapy are:
Effleurage (Stroking Movements): These are the gentle strokes, which allow the oil to penetrate the body and bring calmness and relaxation to the body and mind. The whole hand is used to make the strokes, which can be gentle or firm depending upon the need. These strokes help to increase circulation, relaxation of the muscles and relieve the body of stress and tension.
Petrissage (Kneading Movements): In this, gentle rubbing movements are applied but should be done in such a way that there is no pain or discomfort. The rubbing should be smooth and gentle. It is generally applied in the back, muscular and fatty areas, and is good for releasing trapped toxins, relaxing muscles and encouraging the lymphatic to flow.
Friction (Circular Movements): Rubbing the skin in circular movements is really beneficial in cold and poor circulation.
Raking Movements: In this, the fingers are joined stiffly at the joints and raking movements with one or both the hands are applied just like playing a piano.
There are various methods of massaging in aromatherapy, which are highly effective and efficient in bringing the desired results. Before choosing the type of massage, the essential oil to be selected and mixed with the carrier oil in order to make them appropriate for use. The most commonly practiced and popular methods are:
Swedish: Developed by Swedish professor ling, it is one of the most popular forms of massage, which incorporates a feeling of well being within us. It is very beneficial for reducing emotional and physical stress.
Neuromuscular massage: This triggers the muscles and nerves of the body and hence also called the trigger point therapy. Neuromuscular massage is the basis of aromatherapy massage, which is helpful in restoring the balance of the autonomic nervous system. Stanley Leif developed this method.
Lymphatic massage: This method helps in detoxification of body and enhancing immune system of the body by improving the flow of lymph. Marguerite Maury incorporated this method in aromatherapy.
Hand Massage: This applies a gentle touch of fingers in the hand and especially used for older people who cannot avail the back, foot and facial massage frequently. A gentle stork is given to the hands, from the wrist to fingertips, which gives much relaxation.
Head, Neck & Facial Massage: In this appropriate essential oil is put into the fingertips and a gentle massage is done around the head with the fingers. The movement should be gentle, smooth and controlled.
In case to get relief from headache, its better to start with neck to the base of scalp. Use the fingers in firm, but not hard effleurage strokes. The massage should be continued for a necessary time. Move the hands to the base of the neck with hands on each side of vertebrae. The pressure on vertebrae should be strictly avoided.
A self- facial massage of the jaw line up to a point immediately below the ears is also very useful to cope with stressful situations like sitting exams, interviews etc.
Foot Massage: In this massage is done from the toes to the ankle. Is suggested to take the help of some other person while performing this massage.
Shoulder & Back Massage: Lie down with your face pointing the ground in a relaxed position. Now, starting with shoulder, use the thumbs and palms with effleurage and petrissage actions, moving from the base of the neck outwards to the shoulder. Now, move towards the vertebra of the back with effleurage strokes, with hands either side of the vertebrae. Repeat this for some times.
Full Body Massage: Full body massage includes the complete massage of
body including the arms, legs and abdomen.
The Arms: Upward strokes from the wrist to the armpit are applied whereas for fatty and muscular areas petrissage strokes are used.
The Abdomen: In this, circular movents in a clockwise direction are done using effleurage strokes.
The Legs ? Here also effleurage strokes are used for massage starting from the legs upwards from the ankle to the thigh. Petrissage strokes are used on the fatty or muscular areas.
Lower abdomen and hips: Start with effleurage strokes at the lower back and slide over the hips, then move each hand over the abdomen. Use the whole of the hand flat against the skin.
Aromatherapy body massage creates and enhances a feel of joyousness and delight within us. It is also a very successful technique of provoking mental abilities and memory.
